Let’s experience magnificence of nature and authenticity in Kefalonia!
Kefalonia, with the size of 781 square-km, is the largest of the Ionian Islands. Its nature is spectacular: It has high mountains, deep valleys, lots of caves, strange geological formations and natural phenomena. Kefalonia is one of the few islands which still has not lost its authenticity. With its mountainous and seaside sceneries and all the shades of blue and green Kefalonia will astonish you every minute of the trip.
We will pick you up from one of our set pick-up points at approx. 7.00 a.m. (depending on your resort) and bring you to the very north of Zakynthos, to Agios Nikolaos, better known as Skinari, from where the ferry-boat to Kefalonia leaves at 9.30 am. If it is your lucky day you may also see some dolphins which on several occasions accompany the ferry-boat on its way to the port of Pessada in Kefalonia.
The trip starts from the south of the island. So from the port of Pessada we travel to the Monastery of Saint Gerasimos, the Patron Saint of the island. The monastery is of outmost religious importance for the island, with its 500 years old icons and the coffin with the relics of the saint, which you will have the chance to see! Interesting is as well that underneath the old church is the cave where Saint Gerasimos spent the most of the time of his life!
Then we head north through some of the most beautiful and dramatic landscapes to Drogarati Cave, also called the Dragon cave. The cave is famous for its stalactites and stalagmites. Speleologists agree that this cave is about 150 million years old and it is a rare geological phenomenon. The cave has such perfect acoustics that Maria Callas once used it to perform one of her many memorable concerts.
From there we continue to the underground lake Melissani, the lake of the Nymphs. The lake is in a cave with an unusual open roof-dome. At noon when the sun comes in and the water reflects it all around, it’s a sensational experience! You’ll never forget this colorful natural wonder, while being in the middle of it in a small boat, rowed by a fancy “gondolier”.
Next Stop is Agia Efimia, a romantic traditional village in the north. We stay there for about one hour for lunch in a beautiful tavern by the sea with a view to the island Ithaca, the famous kingdom of Odysseus(Ulysses). You can enjoy delicious Greek food and some local dishes.
After lunch we travel southwest towards the capital of Kefalonia – Argostoli. On our way there we have a photo-stop above beautiful Myrtos Beach, where “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” was filmed. As we drive along the coastline you will have a spectacular view of the island´s stunning landscape.
Our tour ends back at Pessada, where the ferryboat is waiting for us to take us back to Zakynthos.
You will be back in your resort at approx. 9 p.m.
Out TIPS for a pleasant trip: comfortable walking shoes, hat, sun lotion, scarf for ladies for entrance of the monastery, fully charged camera to take a lot of photos.
